Student: How long will it take to get a black belt?
Teacher: 5 Years.
Student: Well what if I train twice as hard?
Teacher: 10 years.
Student: Well what if I focused on it day & night & only stopped training for food?
Teacher: 15 Years.
Student: That doesn't make any sense, can you please explain?
Teacher: If you have both eyes focused on where you want to go you will have no eyes to find the way.

Minimum practice time between grades
6th Kyu (Rokyu) 六級: 2 months
5th Kyu (Gokyu) 五級: 2 months
4th Kyu (Yonkyu) 四級: 3 months
3rd Kyu (Sankyu) 三級: 6 months
2nd Kyu (Nikyu) 二級: 7 months
1st Kyu (Ikkyu) 一級: 8 months
1st Dan (Shodan) 初段: 1 year
2nd Dan (Nidan) 二段: 2 years
3rd Dan (Sandan) 三段: 3 years
After Sandan, grades are awarded with no requirement for a taken grading.
These periods should be regarded as the absolute minimum time between grades and could only be achieved by a normal student training daily and intensively. For the majority of people, a period of 2-3 times longer should be envisaged.
